How to find the perfect caterer for your wedding

Having great food at your wedding is an important part of your special day – after all, you don’t want your guests going hungry! We’ve all been to a wedding that was near perfect but the food wasn’t really up to scratch. So, to prevent that happening on your big day, here are some great tips from us on finding the perfect caterer to complement your wedding.

Think about what you want

By the time it comes to arrange a caterer, you’ve probably already spent plenty of time considering the perfect venue, dress, make up, and so forth. Well, now you need to put that level of effort into planning your catering too!

There are lots of things to consider when it comes to catering. What type of food would you like? Do you want a sit down meal? Would you prefer a more relaxed barbecue style set up? It really comes down to your preferences and what’ll work best for you.

You’ll also need to think about what you’re willing to spend. If you want the elegance and sophistication of a three course meal, make sure you think about how much it’s going to cost. Warning: it can be a lot more than you think! If it comes down to it and you don’t have the money to splash out on a fancy meal, a buffet tends to be cheaper and provides a more flexible and relaxed feel. It’s totally up to you.

Ask the venue for recommendations

Asking your venue for advice when it comes to catering is great idea. They’ve no doubt hosted a lot of weddings and will probably have a recommended list of caterers they’ve worked with before – and maybe even a few exclusive options out there. Not to mention they might be able to tell you who to steer clear of, which is equally as important.

You never know, your wedding venue might already have perfect caterer in mind to make sure you achieve your dream wedding, so don’t be afraid to ask!

Ask friends and family for suggestions

Similarly, your friends and family will be able to offer advice and guidance about catering, especially if they’ve been to other weddings before. They may have had the best food they’ve ever eaten at one wedding, or might’ve experienced a disastrous meal at another. Ask them for advice based on their experiences – they might well have a fantastic idea for you. However, make sure you’re not swayed by them. If the idea sounds nice for someone else, but it’s not really what you want from the day, don’t be afraid to politely decline!

Google is a fantastic source for information, and one that should definitely be used to help you find the perfect caterer! Combine your use of Google with Pinterest searches to develop a wedding ‘mood-food’ board and see what you come up with. This will help you decide what type of food you want for your wedding

Once you’ve created your ‘mood-food’ board, you can use Google to help you see what’s out there and which caterers are local to you. After finding a caterer you like the sound of, check their website for reviews and testimonials to determine if they’re right for you.

Meet with a few different caterers

If you can, try to meet with a few different caterers in person. That way, you can get a feel for them and decide who is the right fit for your wedding. Do you feel like they understand what’s important for you on your special day? Are they open to suggestions? Are they willing to adapt a menu to fit your needs? These are all things that you’ll find out from meeting with them in face to face – unfortunately, there are some things that Google simply can’t tell us!

It’s also important to make sure that your caterer is happy to consider any dietary or allergy requirements that you or your guests might have. The last thing you want is for one of your friends or family to feel unwelcome because their dietary needs haven’t been considered!

Trust your instincts

Ultimately, you and your fiance need to feel comfortable with the caterer you choose. Food is an important part of the day, and definitely something that’ll be a talking point for many of the guests! You should feel confident that the caterer you choose will provide the right type of food to suit your wedding.

When you’re meeting with caterers, don’t be afraid to walk away if you’re not 100%.Trust your instincts and hold out until you find the perfect fit for you. Much like with your wedding dress, it’s crucial that you find the right one for you. Are you still looking for the perfect dress for your big day?
