Choosing the right flowers for your wedding

Do you know your flora from your fauna? How about the difference between a dahlia and a delphinium?

If you’re planning your wedding but shudder at the thought of choosing your wedding flowers, look no further. We’ve done the hard work for you, so read on to find out everything you need to know to pick the perfect blooms for your big day.

Set your budget

First things first, you need to decide how much you’re able to spend! Wedding flowers take up roughly 10% of the overall wedding budget on average. However, you might need to factor in a little extra cash if you’re wanting to go above and beyond with a grand display. Additional charges for set up and take down, as well as accessories like ribbons and stands, can easily add up.

Get inspired

In this modern age there are so many places to find inspiration. If you haven’t already, sign up to Pinterest and create a board and start pinning things that you like. If you’re a bit more old school, you could create a physical mood board or scrap book with cuttings from bridal magazines and swatches of your colour scheme. This’ll really help your florist understand your vision for your big day and help your imagination come to life.

What’s in season?

Perhaps one of the most important factors when choosing your flowers is finding out what will be in season on your big day. Do some research and find out what blooms when, as it’s more difficult and expensive to source flowers which are out of season.

When to book

This is a tough one as lots of different florists operate on different timescales – and some are more in demand than others! Ideally, start looking for florists between six and 12 months before the big day. This is especially important if your wedding is going to be in peak season – as some florists get booked up very far in advance. Don’t just go for the first one you meet either, take the time to meet a few of them, discuss your ideas and go with your gut.

The bridal bouquet

The most important piece in the floral decoration is ultimately the bridal bouquet. When contemplating this centerpiece, think about what will match your dress. If your dress is a bright white, there are many colours and styles that’ll work. However if your wedding dress is a statement colour, think about different shades which will complement each other. Colour co-ordinate

Don’t forget about colour when you’re deciding on those big day blooms. If you don’t know where to start, take some swatches with you when you visit your florist and they will be able to advise you on what will work with your colour scheme.

Think about your theme when you’re deciding on your wedding flowers. Different shapes, sizes and colours of arrangements will make a big impact. Are you having a stylish, modern wedding in an upmarket hotel? Consider sleek but simple arrangements. If your big day is going to be more of a rustic affair, you could try big, bright flowers mixed in with greenery, and tied with twine for a countryside vibe.

What’s suitable for your venue?

If your big day is taking place in a grand and stately hotel, you’ll need big, eye catching blooms so that they don’t get lost in the space. However if your ceremony is in a small, intimate venue like a registry office, it’s worth thinking about smaller pieces that are easy to set up.

It’s always a good idea to speak to the venue staff beforehand to see how much time you’ll have to set up, to make sure you’ve got time to have everything perfectly in place.

We hope these handy hints have given you a little extra help deciding on your big day flowers. For more tips on arranging the big day – from table planning to cake tasting – be sure to check out our 12 month wedding planning checklist.
